"Dead to ones self”. I came from my discipleship meeting and this phrase was ringing so loud in me ear that I couldn’t keep it out of my mind. What does it actually mean? What is Jesus actually saying when He asks you to die to yourself? Dead to self.
The agenda that the world keeps pushing to us is that we need to fight for ourselves, fight for our freedom, work towards improving our own selves, work towards every dream wish and goal we could ever want. “Dead to oneself”. It pushes working so fervently towards achieving EVERY goal we have, which makes us forget what/who we are pushing aside to obtain this goal. Now I mean, people would trample over people to get to the top. Not forgetting that we are completely ignoring Jesus. Now here comes Jesus, Lover of your actual soul, a person Who knew you long before God created this world tells you, “Nicolla, to follow Me, You have to be dead to yourself.” I think this is the hardest thing for new Christians to comprehend and even follow because everything we have been fed is to what? Strive and aim for our dreams. And that’s gonna taste bitter, for the people who are not truly aware of the gravity of what Jesus did and why He’s asking us to follow Him. So “dead to self” that I keep hearing, is letting go of EVERYTHING that made me who I am (aspirations, desires, sin, fears etc) i. pursuit of who He wants me to be. And that’s the greatest privilege I could ever receive from Him; to be molded, shaped and pruned to become the gem that He saw me as (even while I was a completely broken person), sees me as and will continue to see me as. And becoming the person He wants me to become cements my identity in Him. Because He is in fact the author of my identity. And as I continue to grow in His word and become dead to myself I slowly start wearing the rose tinted glasses that He wears and I start seeing myself as the person He wants me to become and I start seeing His kids how He sees them. How beautiful is that? Living life through Jesus’ Rose tinted glasses. Imagine in a world where we see the deadness of the flesh (like we were zombie people) and once you wear His rose tinted glasses you actually see every single human as the beautiful creation He made them to be. Regardless of their brokenness.
I write this having Holy Spirit convicted me about my own ambitions, my own drives and my goals. The moment I chose to follow Him, all those should have been all forfeited and I should have aligned myself with what He wants for my life. And that’s what we have to do on a daily basis, be dead to self and do what He has called us to do. In the end it will benefit us.
As I was typing this I heard this song from SEU Worship called Live Like Dying (high key do not know the lyrics, but it kept playing in my head and I had to listen to every song I had of theirs to find the song) lol. So live (through Jesus being alive in you) like dying (while dying to yourself).
